This list ranks the best college basketball uniforms of all time as identified by a specific player or team. If you bought your college basketball shorts from Eastbay back in the day, these rankings are for you.

Eamonn Brennan of The Athletic published an article ranking "The best college basketball uniforms of all time" in April 2020 that is excellent and served as a helpful resource while compiling these rankings. You can find it here: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/1769432/2020/04/27/the-best-college-basketball-uniforms-of-all-time/. Unlike these rankings, Brennan's piece includes some real journalism--including the cultural and historical significance of some of the details of the uniforms in these rankings--and is worth a read.

To the rankings:

1) Georgetown; Allen Iverson Era

Number one with a bullet for the best college basketball uniforms of all time is Georgetown during the Allen Iverson era. From the over-sized "HOYAS" on the gray jerseys, the white letters and numbers on the navy ones, and--as their most distinguishing characteristic--the kente cloth pattern running down the jerseys and most of the shorts, these uniforms are perfect.

The shorts, the gray ones in particular, are the best college basketball shorts ever conceived. The kente cloth pattern is unique, its 3/4 length is stylish, and Georgetown's understated color scheme gives it even more prominence.

The undershirt with the cut sleeves and Jordan XIs made Iverson in this uniform the coolest basketball player of his (and perhaps any) generation.

2) Arizona; Mike Bibby Era

For the Mike Bibby Era of Arizona basketball, it was all about the shorts, which are the second best shorts in college basketball behind Iverson's Georgetown shorts. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, you either purchased these through Eastbay or were jealous of your friend who got them first.

The basketball logo resembling a sun with the "A" in the middle is a thing of beauty. Plus, the way in which "CATS" on the right leg and the basketball logo on the left leg hang reveals the weight of the mesh shorts, a weight which was engineered out of basketball uniforms a ways into the 21st century (a development that was good for performance, but bad for aesthetics).

The fact that Zona's 1997 team was so fun to watch during its stunning run to the national championship elevates these uniforms to a level of cool that only Iverson can top. For me, the navy uniforms with red font was the team's best look.

3) North Carolina; Rasheed Wallace & Jerry Stackhouse / Vince Carter & Antawn Jamison Eras

Carolina blue and argyle give the Tar Heels the most recognizable uniforms in college basketball. For my taste, UNC's unforms peaked in the 1990s because their vintage of Carolina blue was more muted and had more character than its more modern counterparts, which lean too electric, and the more prominent hem at the bottom of the shorts is superior to the newer looks with barely any.

On the jerseys, the school's name circling player numbers looked great on the heavy mesh fabric and created a fun visual with "NORTH" at the top of the jersey and "CAROLINA" hanging above the belt line.

I prefer the white jerseys, but the Carolina blue ones are a solid second banana.

4) Syracuse; John Wallace Era into Carmelo Anthony Era

Syracuse's uniforms during the John Wallace era were so appealing primarily due to their light shade of navy blue. Indeed, the blue stripe down the side of the white jerseys and blue detailing on the shorts added a brightness to these uniforms that puts them ahead of those worn during the Carmelo Anthony era.

That said, these two eras are linked for purposes of these rankings for two reasons. First, John Wallace and co. walked so Carmelo Anthony and co. could run, so we must pay our respects to those who came before us. Second, Syracuse's logo of the "S" snaked around the basketball appears on both sets of shorts (as it should, because this logo was fire) and thus links the two eras together.

The font on the Carmelo Anthony uniforms is more refined than that of its predecessor and the all orange set with navy blue detailing that Syracuse wore when it won the 2003 national championship has been immortalized, but none of that surpasses the punchiness of the uniforms worn by Mr. Wallace when he battled The Untouchables.

5) Maryland; Juan Dixon Era

Holy details, Batman! These uniforms have a lot going on. For starters, they incorporated all four colors from the state's flag: red, white, black, and gold. Maryland's use of red as their primary color accented with gold, in particular, created an attention-grabbing look.

Second, sticking with the state's flag, the uniforms featured racing stripes as trim throughout and checkered racing flags planted atop the "M" logos on the shorts.

Finally, the massive font used to spell "MARYLAND" and over-sized numbers completed the in-your-face look that matched the playing style of the 2002 championship team.

6) Michigan; Fab Five Era

This is a uniform that needs no introduction. Michigan's Fab Five revolutionized college basketball with their brash style and fearless play. The simplistic style of and muted maize on their uniforms gave the team a seasoned look that belied their age and experience. The "M" on each side of the shorts is timeless.

Hot take: the white jerseys are nearly as strong as the more celebrated maize jerseys. But regardless of jersey color, the baggy shorts, black Nikes, and black socks were iconic and gave the Fab Five a look all their own.

7) Villanova; Kerry Kittles Era

It's the burgundy. That's what makes Nova's uniforms during the Kerry Kittles era so distinct and memorable. Traditionally, Villanova's uniforms--including the threads that they wore when they won national championships in 1985, 2016, and 2018--feature navy blue and light blue. Not burgundy.

For Kittles and his one high sock, the burgundy accentuated Nova's navy and added a fun element to the teams' color scheme, as exemplified by the arcade-esque Wildcats logo on the shorts and off kilter "VILLANOVA" on the jerseys.

For comparison, here are the uniforms that the 2018 team wore, which were throwbacks to the jerseys worn by the 1985 team. These bad boys--having been stripped of any 90s nostalgia--are all business, clean as you like, and essentially perfect (just like the Nova Death Star throughout its 2018 tournament run):

8) Duke; Trajan Langdon Era

Although not as famous as Carolina blue, Duke's shade of royal blue is aesthetically pleasing in its own right and--dare I say--overlooked due to the overwhelming amount of animosity and jealousy directed at the Blue Devils. To be fair, some (most?) of that is well deserved due to the entitled nature of its fan base or, even worse, decades worth of kowtowing by referees to Coach K. But alas, Duke is inevitable and their jerseys have always looked great so let's channel Dr. Strangelove and give Duke's sets from the 1990s the love and recognition that they deserve.

As to the details, the infamous four letter word--"DUKE"--on the V-neck jerseys is legendary and strikes fear in the heart of opposing teams. Moreover, the Duke logo on the shorts with the ball and hoop epitomizes college basketball. I know that's an obvious thing to say because they are basketball shorts after all, but you know what I mean. In fact, that logo on those shorts is what makes the 1990s version of Duke's uniforms superior to later iterations, which dropped it.

Further, Duke's black uniforms are underrated. They serve as the perfect base for Duke's bright shade of blue and have to be the best alternate uniforms out there, giving Duke in the 1990s three stellar looks.

Finally, Trajan Langdon was a killer and one of the few Duke superstars to garner public acceptance (see, for example, JJ Redick for a Duke player at the other end of the spectrum). That's why the Alaskan Assassin is the bannerman for 1990s Duke for purposes of these rankings.

9) Georgia Tech; Stephon Marbury Era

Georgia Tech's uniforms during the Stephon Marbury era are usually overlooked and rarely discussed in these sort of conversations, but not here.

Tech's trio of colors--gold, navy blue, and white--work well together. Moreover, gold is aesthetically pleasing as a primary color and not all that common, so it gave the Yellow Jackets a unique look to stand out from the crowd during the golden era of college basketball uniforms.

But the best feature of Marbury's Georgia Tech uniforms was the unconventional design of the shorts. While the right leg had a slashing colored pattern, the left leg had a Yellow Jacket logo above the knee AND "GT" off the hip. This design was unbalanced and fun without being too busy.

For the jerseys, the school's name circling the player numbers worked well, especially with the "GEORGIA" arching over the flat "TECH" on bottom (the inverse approach to that taken by UNC with the flat "NORTH" over the smiling "CAROLINA" underneath).

10) Connecticut; Ray Allen / Richard Hamilton Eras

UCONN during the Ray Allen and Rip Hamilton eras claims the last spot in the top ten based on the strength of its color scheme, which balances perfectly Connecticut's navy blue with red, and, moreover, prominent Husky logo on the side of the shorts.

I'll stand down and let Ray, Rip, and not to be forgotten, Khalid El-Amin, do the heavy lifting.

11) Arkansas; "40 Minutes of Hell" Era

"RAZORBACKS" spread across the white jerseys and the Razorback barreling through the "A" on the shorts make these uniforms iconic. Let's all give a Hog Call of gratitude that Arkansas under Coach Cal brought these babies back and still sport them today.

12) Memphis State; Penny Hardaway Era

Memphis blue and gray make a top notch color combination and those shorts with that Tiger logo are tough to beat. Plus, Penny Hardaway--a silky smooth and towering point guard at 6'7''--made them look pretty damn cool.

13) Florida; Mike Miller Era

For Florida, it's all about the killer color combination and iconic Gator logo on the shorts. The boldness of the blue and black jerseys captured the essence of college basketball in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

14) St John's; Felipe Lopez Era

These were so unconventional and objectively hideous that they were attractive. I don't know what else to say about St. John's skyline uniforms during the Felipe Lopez era, other than that the yellow detailing really tied the whole uniform together.

15) Wake Forest; Tim Duncan Era into Chris Paul Era

The Demon Deacons might be the best nickname in college sports. It's sinister. So of course, it's only fitting that their best uniforms were made famous by one of the most cerebral basketball players of all time: Sir Tim Duncan. Wake's old gold and black look great together and the bubble numbering somehow worked and didn't ruin the shorts, which shined with the staggered "WF" logo.

Chris Paul looked great in these threads years later when the jersey font was simplified.

16) Cincinnati; Kenyon Martin Era

The Bearcats' uniforms during the Kenyon Martin era stand out for the cat paw effects on the "C" and, moreover, cat stripes running down the jersey and shorts. The cut sleeve look on the jerseys was regrettable, but overall, these uniforms matched the ferocity with which the Martin-led Cincinnati squad played.

17) Kentucky; The Untouchables Era

DENIM! On basketball uniforms! And it worked! Granted, the white jerseys were superior to the blue / denim ones, but that these sets played at all is almost as remarkable as the team itself.

Kentucky broke these out as throwbacks this year. The logo on the shorts alone warrants their inclusion in the rankings:

18) Michigan State; Mateen Cleaves Era

These iconic and edgy uniforms fit the Flintstones perfectly on their way to capturing the 2000 national championship. "MICHIGAN STATE" flowing like a banner across the jersey, imbalanced shorts with "S" on one side the Spartan logo on the other, and "S" patterned trimming were bold design choices that paid dividends. Well done, Reebok.

19) Tennessee; Allan Houston Era

Creamsicle, baby. These uniforms, which, thankfully, the Volunteers still rock today, are beautiful in white or orange. The big "T" on each side of the shorts and "TENNESSEE VOLUNTEERS" circling the numbers make for good detailing without doing too much.

20) UNLV; Larry Johnson Era

Larry Johnson and Tark the Shark led a legendary Runnin' Rebels team that wore these perfectly simplistic uniforms while they dunked all over Duke on the way to the 1990 national championship. Also, NEVER mess with a jacked dude who wears a baggy T under his jersey.

21) Kansas; Keith Langford Era

22) Massachusetts; Marcus Camby Era

These uniforms are remarkable for the interesting material and, moreover, enormous "U" on the chest of Marcus Camby's condor-esque wing span. While the jerseys are great, the shorts, which bring little to table, hold them back a bit.

23) Florida State; Charlie Ward Era

This is a strange one, I know. What can I say? The heart wants what the heart wants. These uniforms are perfectly simple and let Florida State's elite logo and color scheme do the work. More importantly, they were worn by a Heisman and national championship winning quarterback who also played in the NBA. That's just silly.

24) UCLA; Baron Davis Era

That acronym with those colors requires no explanation; however, I must say that these uniforms have been so good for so long that we take them for granted.

25) Alabama; Crimson Tide Throwbacks

Nate Oats debuted these 1980s throwbacks in 2024, the first and only season in which Alabama made the final four. Coincidence? I think not. These threads are beautiful and have rightfully stuck around, just with some tweaks to the Elephant on the shorts.

26) Illinois; Deron Williams, Luther Head, and Dee Brown Era

Thick, juicy, and smooth. These are adjectives that defined Deron Williams' game and, for purposes of these rankings, the Illini's uniforms when they battled their way to the 2005 national championship game on the strength of a nasty back court.

27) Purdue; Glenn Robinson Era

I don't know what was going on with those shorts, but I like it!

28) Stanford; Casey Jacobsen Era

Simple and regal. The Cardinal uniforms during the Casey Jacobsen era matched the university's persona and did the impossible: made (real) sports at Stanford cool.

That's right, I just did a top 28. Deal with it.
