These are my definitive rankings of the best uniforms in college football right now. The rankings consider all uniform combinations. This list includes my top ten.

1) Michigan

The Wolverines claim the top spot in these rankings with their elite color scheme, winged helmets, tradition, and versatility.

Michigan is one of the few teams in college football that uses two primary colors for its home uniforms: maize and blue. This distinguishes Michigan's traditional home set from most opponents and, when paired with the winged helmets, gives the Wolverines a look that is immediately recognizable. As to the helmets themselves, they are the best in college football. Their unique design, which Fitz Crisler famously brought with him from Princeton in 1938, matches the physical style of play associated with the program and the brightness of the maize compliments perfectly the deep blue upon which it is placed.

But enough words. Michigan showed they have the best uniforms in college football with their 2024 Rose Bowl fit:

The block "M" on the shoulder pads with the Rose Bowl finish and silver Jumpman logo, which is reserved solely for playoff games, take Michigan's traditional home uniforms, which are stellar in their own right, to the next level.

A program needs more than just one elite uniform combination to out shine the competition, and Michigan has those in spades. For the home jerseys, the big game blues are slick and were immortalized one snowy November afternoon in Ann Arbor:

For the away uniforms, the white jerseys with maize pants are stunning, especially when accented with white socks (a personal favorite); the all whites pop; and the navy pants have been a nice addition.

Although opinions will vary, Michigan's case for the best uniforms in college football is nigh unassailable.

2) Texas

The Longhorns sport the second best helmet in college football, the best logo, and their own unique color in burnt orange that differentiates them from the field. Also, "TEXAS" spelled out on the front of the jerseys is an underrated feature that surpasses attempts to do the same by other teams (see, for example, Arkansas or Indiana).

Unlike Michigan and most other teams in these rankings, Texas has just two iterations of its uniforms--one home (burnt orange jerseys) and one away (all whites)--that it refuses to mess with, probably because there's nothing to improve. That level of consistency speaks volumes.

Beyond the details, Vince Young seared Texas' all whites into the brains of college football fans across the country when he caught the corner of the endzone in the Rose Bowl against USC in 2009. I channel Vince's essence in this image anytime I slink through a closing door or beat another pedestrian (unaware they are racing me, no doubt) to an entry way:

3) Ole Miss

Take one look at the fit Ole Miss broke out for their breakthrough-victory over Georgia in the 2026 Sugar Bowl, and you'll see why the Rebels land this high in the rankings.

The icy white camo helmets, script "Ole Miss" in red font, all white jersey and pants, and powder blue names and numbers come together nicely to present an undeniably attractive look. Ole Miss gets bonus points for breaking these babies out in a game in which Georgia was favored to win by a touchdown--that took some serious onions.

Beyond the Sugar Bowl set, each Ole Miss uniform combination featuring powder blue looks great in its own right. The getups that feature red more heavily really pop and give the Rebels a distinct look few can match while the combinations that double down on powder blue or rely on white to accentuate it work well too.

And now, Jaxson Dart time. That man was born to wear powder blue, and he knows it:

4) Florida

The second Jordan Brand to achieve a ranking, Florida's orange, blue, and white color scheme with the script "Florida" on the helmets and iconic Gator logo on the pants is a thing of beauty with unmatched brand recognition. Further, Florida's many uniform combinations add flavor while hueing close enough to the program's tradition to keep the Ol' Ball Coach happy. The white jerseys with the orange pants may be their best look.

5) Auburn

Like Texas, Auburn has two looks from which they do not deviate (the only team remaining in these rankings that can say that is Alabama). The Tigers proportion their two primary colors--blue and orange--in a way that brings a pleasing balance to their uniforms.

Overall, Texas' all white look is superior to Auburn's, which adds bold orange piping to the pants, but not by much, and Auburn's road kits beat out anyone else rocking the storm trooper look, Penn State and Oregon included.

Lastly, Auburn's logo with the "A" overlaying the "U" makes for one of the best text logos in college sports and features well on the white helmets. "WAR EAGLE" on the back of the lids is not a bad touch either.

6) Penn State

Penn State's uniforms are traditional and clean. Navy, white, and a Nittany Lion logo at the neckline come together to create one of College Football's most recognizable looks. Moreover, the Nike Swoosh shows better on PSU's uniforms than any other team, perhaps because the uniforms themselves are so perfectly simple.

PSU's uniforms look great at the Rose Bowl. They should play there more often (stubbing their toe against UCLA in September doesn't count) ...

The Nittany Lions' alternate uniforms with the numbers on the helmets and thin navy piping on the pants add a little variety without deviating too far from the team's classic look.

One request: PSU should wear their all white road uniforms with the throwback helmets (piping on the pants optional) for an away game. The extra navy supplied by the numbers would look good on the otherwise all white uniforms.

One more request. PSU should wear the same thing in Happy Valley for a full-stadium white out. Although not traditional, that would create quite the visual. I can see the urine running down Julian Sayin's leg now.

7) LSU

Even though the Bayou Bengals wear their white uniforms for home games and away games, rendering their purple jerseys an after thought, there's no denying that LSU's uniforms match perfectly the vibes of their rabid fanbase and the city that keeps them. That LSU's helmet features both its letters and mascot is an interesting detail not attempted by other programs. The bold purple and gold piping on the shoulder pads is another LSU signature that looks good on all of the team's uniform combinations.

LSU's alternate white helmets are sharp and may actually surpass the gold ones. They look great atop LSU's white, purple, or even gold jerseys, particularly when any of those uniforms contain a Heisman winning quarterback.

8) Alabama

Alabama's crimson is regal while its no frills approach to uniforms is intimidating. Whether those observations stem from Alabama's uniforms themselves or the trauma that Coach Saban inflicted on college football for the better part of two decades, whose to say. Regardless of the answer, the crimson helmets with white numbers will always hit just right, particularly atop mountainous linemen.

9) Oregon

Funded by Phil Knight's bottomless war chest, Oregon's calling card is breaking out unique uniform combinations for each game. In other words, the Ducks take an approach to uniforms that is diametrically opposed to the approach taken by more traditional programs, like Texas, Auburn, Alabama, and even Penn State. Although some of Oregon's more brash combinations miss their mark, any iterations featuring the university's "O" on the helmets--rather than the duck feathers--and leaning into the team's retro vibes are mighty pleasing to the eyes.

Overall, Oregon's color combo is undeniably attractive while its Duck mascot lends itself to being one of the best logos in sports. Indeed, behold its beautiful bust on the Ducks' shoulder pads in some of Oregon's best combinations:

A recommendation: Abandon the duck feathers altogether to avoid more of this:

10) Notre Dame

Notre Dame is football royalty and the simple design of its uniforms is intended to remind you of that (in case the incessant efforts of its fans fall short). The golden helmets are iconic, and for good reason because they look great with any uniform combination the Fighting Irish break out, while the interlocking "N" and "D" on the shoulder pads and pants form a logo befitting a private school, least we forget.

ND's home look with the navy jerseys on gold pants is classic; the navy numbers outlined in gold on the white uniforms really shine; and the Fighting Irish's alternate looks provide some spice without stepping on the program's history.

Overall, the Golden Domers are one of one--no other program uses such a simple helmet design with no text, logos, or piping (even Penn State has a navy line down the middle of its otherwise all white lid). That counts for something and contributes to ND earning the last spot in the top ten.

There were some tough cuts here, including Florida State, UCLA, and Iowa. I will discuss those programs and more in the next addition of these rankings covering teams 11 through 25.
